I'm not sure when I should put the ESP (electronic stability programme) on. Is this good for icy conditions?

Icy conditions?

I would say yes, it's good for this. The ABS braking system and the ESP system work together. The ESP system automatically grips the braking system and the motor's power, if the course of the auto deviates / deflects from the drivers desired direction.

Quote from the 406 Owner's Manual, page 149.

You MUST have the ESP system looked at after any traffic accident.

for everyday driving, just leave it on. you never know when you will be caught out. turn it off if you ever do any track driving (which in a heavy 307cc, i doubt you will)
