Clutch problems on peugeot 206?

Hi. The clutch on my 2001 206 was slipping and i took it to a garage where they put a new clutch in for about £250. A couple of months later the same problem has occured. The garage say they will have a look at it. It doesn't slip all the time but fairly regularly. Its as if the biting point on the pedal is so high that it doesn't catch properly. Has anyone had a similar problem with the peugeot 206. Also the clutch was changed by the garage on 13th may this year. I can't find any warranty info onthe receipt. Whats the usual procedure if the fault reoccurs after work being done. Just checked my receipt and i paid 360 pounds of the new clutch. Thanks.

Hi,i have changed a clutch on my 206 just 5 days ago.Was have similar problem like you,but the thing is that you must change all part's inside like flywheel and roller's. If you have Peugeot car ,the original part for him is named "Valeo". The price for that here in Greece is about 130 euro + 200 for mechanic to replace you that,so have look ballance betwin ''euro'' end ''pounds''... Also it can be noisy-when engine running- and hard to press clutch, better go with you'r bill wich you have payed an thell them that you have problem.Any way you must replace all parts in clutch (3 of them). Good luck!

While a clutch is most likely, no one can ever be absolutely certain about cars. A transmission linkage problem could have the same effects. The stall test with the hand brake is a bad idea. First of all, it if very hard on the clutch and engine, and second is that it is invalid if the throwout linkage is stuck. And a worn clutch should make it easier to shift, not harder. So the symptoms are contradictory, even though both seem clutch related. But a clutch is not that hard to do. Parts are about $200, and it takes about 4 hours on most cars, to remove and replace the tranmission. On an air cooled VW, or on a car with a separate bellhousing like a Volvo 140, I could do a clutch in less than an hour. Just invest in one of those plastic alignment tools to help put the friction disk in the right place. It really helps.

HI, i have a slight problem with my clutch(s reg 206) it sometimes revs really high and just stalls.

i posted a queston on here and got this reply off Rodney. Its a bit lengthy but here it is, hope it helps.

Many thanks to Diag2000 for the help he gave me with my 206 Engine cutting out problem also Teddy from another forum for sending me some copy which backed up what diag2000 was telling me and gave me the explanation I was looking for.

For those of you who have, or are suffering from this problem then here was my solution.

My problem started about 12 weeks ago and initially would show up once or twice a week but has got progressively worst until last week when it would do it on virtually every journey.

The problem was, that mainly (but not always) during deceleration at any speed my engine would just die. No warning lights on the dash and the rev counter showing the correct engine speed. Depressing the clutch and letting the revs drop to zero brought the dash board lights on. Then by just dropping the clutch the engine would burst into life until the next time it died.

Also on a couple of occasion the engine revving up all by itself (This was not due to the idle stepper motor as I had it disconnected)

I had checked all the normal things, idle stepper motor, changed the MAP sensor, checked the engine speed sensor and was running out of ideas.

I placed an item on the forum asking help in identifying a control box. Diag2000 told me correctly what is was and the dialog continued from there.

Diag2000 suggested that I checked a few things as follows: -

Earth connection to the gearbox.

Earth connection on the near side chassis leg.

MAP sensor not contaminated.

Engine speed sensor (see below).

Throttle position potentiometer.

Diag2000 than asked for a picture of my ignition coil pack (aren’t digital cameras great)

He said I had the old type, these were liable to cause problems, he suggested I fit the new type (see below) along with Bosch plugs and new plug extensions.

I did that last Friday and have used the car a lot over this weekend and so far it’s been as good as gold so I feel confident that my problems are over.

I have to say I was not convinced as I thought (wrongly) if the coil pack was breaking down then the car would be misfiring, also why did it only happen when decelerating.

Well apparently when the coil pack goes wrong or the spark is not going to the plugs it can send spikes back to the ECU via the main wiring or the injector wiring. This can cause the ECU do a number of nasty things including shutting down (a bit like your computer hanging)

Why does it show up when you decelerate, apparently the resistance of spark plug gap increases during deceleration. Meaning, if the spark can’t jump the gap it has to go somewhere else.

So if you have the problem I described please check your coil pack. The old type has a black connector and square shoulders. The new modified type that Peugeot released has a grey connector and or round shoulders. (mine had a black connector and round shoulders) £84.00 from Peugeot.

If yours is cutting out with the K light coming on and the rev counter dying then check the engine speed sensor, these suffer from heat and can go open circuit when hot (causing the engine to stop) and be ok when the engine cools down.

If yours is cutting out at traffic light or won’t idle check the idle stepper motor.

Once again thank you Diag2000, EdinburghAndy, Teddy and all that contributed I would have never had got there without the help of the forum.

There was an interesting article in the February edition of Car Mechanics regarding 206 electronic problems worth looking out for.

I had rung 3 Peugeot dealers who had never heard of this problem, It had been into a dealer to have the ECU connected to the diagnostics machine (no fault found).

Diag2000 suggests that this is a common problem, Car Mechanics mag suggests this is a common problem so why don’t all the dealers know about it. Even Peugeot released a modified coil pack?

I hope that’s me sorted and I have learnt a lot about my pugs electronics.

If I can supply anymore information the please contact me.

the clutch assembly will have a warranty on it,sometimes the labour is not included though? The pedal biting point should not be high?Let the garage look at it first before looking for problems that may just be needing an adjustment?

did,nt they change the pressure plate too? when you put a new clutch in your suppose to check the flywheel and change the pressure plate.
